Music Catch Up
7/16/2008
I've been meaning to write up a bunch of the acts I've caught over the last few months. Here they are in reverse order:
The Zombies
Last night it was the Zombies who are still in fine form. Colin Blunstone can still belt out the high notes and Rod Argent still has blazing keyboard chops (and Argent looked amazing - I'd have guessed he was about 50). I was really glad they played so many tunes off of Odessey and Oracle. It's a great album that they did justice to on stage. The high point of the show was without a doubt the classic rock anthem "Hold Your Head Up" with it's over the top keyboard solo that stretched for eternity. Very glad I caught these guys.
Julia Nixon
Julia Nixon played the Birchmere on the 3rd and Will and I joined some friends in catching the performance. Afterwards we got to go in to the back room and hang with Dave and the rest of the band. Dave had warned up that they might be a little rusty from lack of practice, but I couldn't detect anything short of their usual excellence.
Klezcentricity

Will and I caught up with my former coworker Lisa and her husband's band Klezcentricity. They're a very tight act that plays vintage Klezmer music.
Julie Clark

College Friend of mine Julie Clark played DC Pride and it was great to be in the front row watching her perform. Julie was great but I was disappointed with the crowd. It's a sad fact that at DC Gay Pride the only entertainers who go over well are those who lip sync while dressed in gaudy costumes. Real musicians receive a tepid response at best.
Dragon Song

First I dropped by Nick's in VA to see Dragon Song. I swear they should make an album and market it as "music to listen to while playing Dungeons and Dragon". They're perfect for that sound and I think it would sell well to boot.
