Gay In Guanojuato
3/3/2008

One of the thing I've been meaning to recount since our trip to Mexico was our visit to a gay bar while we were there. Guanojuato only has two gay bars and by convenient coincidence the brother of our tour guide happened to own one. At some point our guide must have picked up on Will and I being a couple and mentioned that if we wanted to go he'd be happy to take us. "Guanojuato only has two gay bars" he told us. "One really nice (his brother's) and the other a dive".

The place was called Paraiso and it was nice. Really nice. No, nicer than any bar here in DC. The owner of the place is also a designer and artist and crafted most of the interior himself.

We didn't stay too long at the place as we'd had a busy day, but the crowd was friendly and mostly 20-something but with several guys in their 30s and 40s. Music was, well, let's just say that conformed to the universal expectations of gay bar music (ugh). Our guide told us that gays weren't too out in Mexico. He claimed the area's heavy Catholicism and conservative social tendencies tended to tamp down openness in the community.
