The Loss of Los Amigos
12/29/2007
Will and I struck out for diner last night and were shocked to see one of my favorite restaurants in Del Ray, the colorful Los Amigos, closed. That place has been there since the early 80s and I remember going there back in that time with my mother. My ex Jay loved the place and we went there very often while we we were dating. The waitresses still remembered me every time I went in. Scouring the Web as to a clue as to what happened I came across this post on a message board:
I was surprised & bummed out to discover that Los Amigos on Mt. Vernon Ave. has closed (as of Sunday 11/11). We were honored as being the very LAST customers. They even took our picture - and unbolted a plaque off the wall and gave it to us. I sure hope they open again in the 'hood. Rent had tripled, they said, and a developer is coming in to redo that plot (and the exterminators place next door too). Del Ray is changing again, but I sure was disappointed to see this establishment forced out after 27 years. We'll miss ya (and those killer margaritas), Adios Los Amigos.
That's really a shame. I so wish I'd known they were going under and had enjoyed one last meal with them. The friendly staff, tasty salsa, and my personal favorite dish, the "Aztec Enchiladas", will be sorely missed. sigh. I guess it's just all part of the overall blanding of Alexandria.
