Mitt Romney's Anti-Atheist Bigotry
12/7/2007
Why yes, I do think that Mitt Romney continues to Fight Anti-Mormon Bigotry with Anti-Atheist Bigotry.
In his speech this week, and in several other statements he's made on the campaign trail, he continued to express a vision of America that excludes those who embrace science and reason over faith and religion. He seemed to indicate that our government should safeguard the interests of persons of faith but not those of reason. Just a few of his comments would include:
"We need a person of faith to run this country"
"freedom requires religion just as religion requires freedom"
"It is as if they are intent on establishing a new religion in America -- the religion of secularism. They are wrong,"
It's a sad fact that those of us not in the superstitious camp are considered fair targets for political bashing in a manner that would never be accepted were it directed at muslims, jews, or hindus. I would really like to see Romney answer this guy's question in a political debate:
"Mitt Romney. You once said that we needed a man of faith to run this country. So why do you believe that an atheist or agnostic, who bases their beliefs off of reason and not faith, is unqualified to run this country."
