Nellie's & The Jukebox Test
9/19/2007

Due to a scheduling mistake I ended up in Nellie's Sports bar last night. I talked with one of the bar staff and was surprised that the place had only been open for a few months as Jimbo had given us t-shirts for the place last October. Entering the place reminded me of a discussion I had with a friend years ago about the possibility of having a gay sports bar in the area. It went something like this:

FRIEND: "I'd be great to have a gay sports bar in the town where regular guys could get together, drink, and watch games."

ME: "Hmm. And what would the jukebox of this sports bar carry?"

FRIEND: "What?"

ME (with my best David Addison smirk): "You know, the music. Would it be "regular guy" music like classic rock and country or would it be the same old queen-fest of Brittany/Madonna/Cher and tired disco?"

FRIEND (looking wounded): "HOW can you say that? What, are you one of those 'I only like straight-acting' types?"

ME: "No, no, I'm all good with it all. But don't be fooling yourself. 'Regular guys' don't hang out in bars that play that kind of music..."

The conversation went downhill from there... Anyway, as I entered Nellie's the first thing I saw was one of the aforementioned disco princesses prancing about on a giant video screen. Sigh. Guess I shoulda known. Still, it was a nice place and had a great balcony upstairs.
