Entrance To the Middle Age
8/12/2007

"I set the limit of a man's life at 70 years; these 70 years have 25,200 days"
-- Ancient Greek historian Herodotus

While modern science may serve to extend Herodotus' limit significantly, there can be little doubt that as of today, at age 40 (14,600 days), I've used up a sizable portion of my existence. I'm hardly having a life-crisis over turning 40 but I do feel it to be a threshold of reflection that keeps drawing my mind the choices I've made in my past and my prospects for the future.

But not this morning. No, this morning we're heading out at the crack of dawn to go skydiving so there's little time for naval gazing. In a few hours I'll be strapped to a beefy ex-marine and flung out an airplane for a 45-second descent to earth. It's supposed to be videotaped so I'll even have a record of the entire dive. In the event that things do go terribly wrong, as so many of my friends keep joking me, just remember:

Otherwise, be back soon with footage of the fall and all that mid-life pondering.
