Easter 2007 & House Design
4/9/2007
It was a nice, if unremarkable Easter weekend. Friday at Freddie's, Saturday work and take a trip to scout out Artomatic, and Sunday and lunch with the family. The weather has been teetering between 70s and snow driving everyone's sinus to misery, but it looks like it's going to settle into spring this week.
Will and I are looking into a new house again. I really want to design and build our own but I don't think that's feasible in this area. The sad fact is that in most of the DC Metro area you can't really own land -- you more rent it at the pleasure of your neighbors. Home Owners Associations, draconian zoning laws and pesky litigious neighbors all conspire to prevent any construction that doesn't result in a bland box of sticks and bricks. The lowest common denominator, the least-innovative, the "Mchouse" are really all that's allowed.
Such a stifling of experimentation and innovation has got to be harmful to our nation in the long run
