Shortbus and Borat
3/22/2007

I saw both Shortbus and Borat last weekend and I must say that both live up to their respective hype.
Shortbus is a film I've been waiting to see for some time. I wrote about it back in 2003 when John Cameron Mitchell started the project (then called the "Sex Film Project") and thought it was an exceptionally good idea: a film with real sex when and where it should appear. The final product is a bit too much about sex perhaps, and suffers from an overly artsy ending (any ending where people suddenly start singing is usually trouble), but over all it's avery engaging film. Good story, good sex (in all sorts of combinations), and a lot to mull over once the credits roll. Very recommended.
Borat was a howlingly funny film that I really enjoyed but there were several times where I though the humor turned a bit mean-spirited. When he was a jerk to decent people for no good reason, and I believed those people to be genuine dupes not actors, I wasn't amused. Being an asshole just because you can get away with it (and who can't?) isn't funny in my book. Still, that small tarnish aside, it's a really good film that'll probably go down as a classic. Go see.
