Fall TV Roundup
10/30/2006
Ah yes, time for the fall TV roundup. Television is so much better these days than when I was a kid. Yes, the Six Million Dollar man was cool, and Kolchak's escapades scared the pants off me, but todays crop of televised distractions are so much better crafted. Here's what is and is not wasting my time on the couch these days:
Still Catch 'Em
- Battlestar Galactica - I still contend this isn't so much a sci-fi show as a military drama. Who cares? It's a great military drama with each episode containing enough social and political issues to chew on for days afterwards. Plus, I love that in the last episode we see the Cylons going all 70's in their basestars interior (snicker). White clothing, blurry camera shots, and feathered haircuts. All that was missing was a disco ball.
- Heroes - A bit slow in the pacing and perhaps too many characters to juggle but this show is fantastic. Hiro alone is probably one of the most compelling characters I've seen on TV in the last five years.
In Flux:
- Lost - I really used to like this show but I'm just about over it. I SO sick of the bad guy ALWAYS winning. I'll give it three more episode for the "others" to suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of our heroes. If not, I'll probably bail. I'm disappointed the writers seem to be angling towards sympathy for the Others' cause. "Yes, they're brutal killers and kidnappers who lifted not a finger to help plane crash survivors, but it's all for a good cause. Right?" Wrong. "Henry" and his crowd should all suffer horrible deaths and I don't want to watch a show that tries to convince me otherwise.
Not Worth My Time:
- Jericho - Has a great premise but bad writing.
- Eureka - Just plain bad. A show about science should include at least a passable nod towards it.
- Kyle XY - Really not a bad effort. I love the "Stranger in a Strange Land" angle and Bruce Thomas is fun to look at, but it's just a bit too teeny-bop for my tastes.
