Burning Man Part 2: Arrival, Set Up, First Impressions
9/14/2006
Arrival
We landed at Burning Man proper monday around 10:00 a.m. passing thru the long (and thankfully empty) entry line which was dotted with burma-shave-style signs. Printed in this years ubiquitous art deco font, they carried clever bits like:
"I once lived a day as if it were my last. People are still mad..."
Everyone greeted us with cries of "Welcome home!" Sean, Ryan, and I were virgins to the event and thus were asked to ring a large bell before entry. We found our way to a suitable camp site and then spent the remainder of the day pitching tents, assembling the bar and art car, and setting up the camp. The other half of our camp showed up around 2:00 in their RV making us 12 in all.
First Night
We didn't finish setup till nearly dusk. Eager to see something before I went to bed, I wandered out into the night where lights flashed, music throbbed, and large gouts of flame spewed into the air. Among the many amazing things I saw that very first night were:
- A telephone booth where once could talk to god
- A large black pyramid that droned with ominous music
- Enormous flower and venus fly-trap vehicles
- A huge roller disco club with wooden floor and free skates
- The Burning Man himself glowing atop the Pavilion of the Future
- A full size, functional recreation of Thunderdome missing only someone dressed as Tina Tuner
- More glow sticks, EL wire, and led-wear on people than I'd ever imagined possible
The list could go on and on, but that's for an upcoming entry...
