Destined for the Desert
8/24/2006
The day has come. I'm off to Baltimore where I'll rendezvous with five people I hardly know for a trek across the country to an enormous and exotic festival in the desert.
Numerous friends have questioned the wisdom of traveling with people who I know so little about. "They could be killers! You could end up buried in the desert and no one would ever find your body!" one friend joked. I can't say I'm terribly concerned that will happen, but just in case something does go wrong I figured I'd better leave an entry that could serve as a fitting conclusion to this site.
The lyrics below are to a song I've penned for one of the band's upcoming albums. It's an expression of "awayness" and redemption inspired by Paul Bowles' great book "The Sheltering Sky".
WALK AWAY FROM YESTERDAY
I had a world of hurt and days of pain
But that's all over now
I let my life get a little insane
I still can't fathom how
One day I just walked away
And now it seems I'm here
Say goodbye to all you know
And you thoughts get very clear
WALK AWAY FROM YESTERDAY
EVERYTHING'S FORGIVEN
IN THE SANDS
IN THE SANDS
From town to town, place to place
Across that great divide
Land and sea, dust and wind
Mountains oh so high
Nightmares still fight inside
I never let them win
Walk away from all you know
And you leave behind your sin
CHORUS: REPEAT
(bridge)CHORUS: REPEAT
I'll return soon -- hopefully with some of the best pictures I've ever taken...
