Top Ten Swords and Sorcery Films (Plus One to Grow On)
7/17/2006

A lot of my friends are getting ready for their yearly pilgrimage to Pennsic -- a HUGE medieval festival. Obligations with work and the band aren't going allow me to attend so I'll have to settle for re-watching some of my old fantasy flicks on DVD.

The early 80's was the golden age of fantasy films. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger got into the act with the Conan franchise. Still, every decade seems to offer up something in the genre. Heck, the greatest of all fantasy films, the Lord of the Rings trilogy was made just a few years ago. Here then are picks for best fantasy films of all time. (Buy any of these items thru these links and my band get a kickback. Thanks!).

  1. Lord of the Rings Trilogy - The greatest fantasy epics of all time, hands down.
  2. Monte Python and the Holy Grail - True geeks know every word of it. (What is the air speed velocity of an African swallow?)
  3. Deathstalker - Don't miss this film! One of the greatest b-flick every made of this genre. Yes the sequels were unredeemable terrible, but the original was a fantastic romp of violence and T&A. Highly Recommended!
  4. Beastmaster - They was once a joke that HBO stood for: "Hey, Beastmaster is On!" -- and with good reason.
  5. Conan the Barbarian - Arnold in a thong, with a sword. The cleverest part of this movie is how they managed to keep him from speaking for the first 1/3 of the film.
  6. Dragonslayer - A well-realized film with solid performances and one of the best dragons ever committed to film. Surprisingly good.
  7. Ladyhawke - Actually a really good film. No, I mean it. Acting and all!
  8. Fire and Ice - An often underrated animated film featuring the art of Frank Franzetta.
  9. Willow - Midgets, a killer wizard battle, and Val Kilmer as a errant warrior. Need we say more?
  10. The Sinbad Collection - Ray Harryhausen at his best.
  11. Hawk the Slayer - Any film that can fit silly string in as a wizard's spell get an big A-Okay from me.
