The Wisdom of Unsupervised Domestic Spying
1/31/2006
Two questions for those who believe that President Bush's unsupervised domestic spying is a good thing for our nation:
- Since our "war" on terrorism is essentially a campaign with no foreseeable termination, how long will it be before a President, or one of his staff members, decides to abuse these surveillance powers for personal gain (spying on political enemies for example)?
- If critics of a President were to accuse him of such abuses exactly what reliable proof could an unsupervised commander in chief offer to the contrary?
Let us not forget that "national defense" was Nixon's excuse for his illegal wiretapping. So when Karl Rove accuses the Democrats of stagnating on a pre-911 mindset, he should perhaps be wary that his own party isn't becoming mired in a pre-Watergate stance.
