8/29/2005 - Naked Pool Party
When a friend invited me to a pool party this last weekend I was very blunt in asking him right up front: "Is this going to be a bathing suit, or a naked pool party?"
He seemed shocked that I would ask. It wasn't that I minded -- either way is good for me -- it's just that I like to know before I agree to attend. At almost 40, I've been around the gay community long enough to know how these things work...
The host of this particular party gave a perfectly good answer: "It'll probably start off as a bathing suit party, but as we've got a keg of beer, it'll probably end with everyone naked." And so it was. I arrived around 7:30 and everyone was dressed. An hour later I think only one guy still had his trunks on. It was a good party. Don and Jim (the hosts) have a great place with plenty of friendly guests, good food, and enough privacy to keep society from sending men with guns after us for not adhering to Judeo-Christian sex ethics.
For me, nudity at parties is always tantalizing at first, indifferent a bit later, and somehow zoological throughout. Nudity emphasizes the truth that humans are little more than highly intelligent animals. I remember looking over at Chrisafer at one point as he squatted at the edge of the pool and was struck by how simian and caveman-like he looked. I don't mean this in any derogatory way, but his lean and hairy form hunched down by the "watering hole" really sent my mind to the works of Desmond Morris -- a naked ape indeed. I wish I'd taken his picture.
