8/21/2005 - Return to the Eagle

When I grabbed a copy of last week's Metro Weekly and read that the building that houses the DC Eagle had been sold I was saddened, but hardly shocked. The gentrification juggernaut has been stomping all about that part of DC and it was only a matter of time till it set its sights on my favorite bar.

The Eagle holds a special place in my heart. It's where I met my husband, made some great friends, and had some really, really great times. I've never been much into the whole leather scene, but something about that bar always seemed a comfortable fit. There was no specific reason why I stoped going to the Eagle. Things just got busy. Work picked up and the band started taking more and more time. Before I knew it, I hadn't seen the place in well over a year, maybe longer. Last night just seemed like the right time for a visit.

The place hadn't changed much, which was nice. Ted was still smiling from behind the bar. He assured me that they still had a five year lease to stay in the building, but that they were beginning to look for a new location. I ran into a bunch of people I used to know: Jeff, Bob, Ed, Don, Jim, Al, and a few others; and it was good to see my face was still recognized.

I suppose I'm a sucker for nostalgia. Whether it's the home town, the school, or my favorite bar, I always want them to just as they were when I enjoyed them the most -- but in the hurried pace of life today, and the booming real estate market of the DC area, that just ain't going to happen.

My busy life isn't about to allow me time to take back up bar hopping. Love the Eagle or not, he's gonna have to be an infrequent date at best; but I think I'll try and keep the times between visits a lot shorter.
