8/9/2005 - A Night With the Coworkers

Colin Hay was excellent last night. Will and I met up with several coworkers (the old Pathways group) at the Birchmere to visit and see him. His wonderful sense of humor is still sharp and his Scottish tenor voice is still capable of those full-voice high notes. I was really happy that all the coworkers really seemed to like him. I will make two suggestion however:

  1. If you get a chance to see him perform with out a band take it. He's actually more entertaining solo.
  2. The only part of the show that was wanting was the keyboards. Sorry, but a Yamaha Motif is no substitute for an old Roland Juno 60. I know, I own both! The Motif is a fine board, but it sounds downright cheesy trying to summon up the rich textures of early 80's synths. Colin, Do yourself a favor and have your keyboardist get the real mccoy. They're not expensive.

The opening act, Brett Dennen, was also interesting. The guy has a good voice and if introspective folk songs filled with evocative lyrics are your thing, I suggest you give him a listen.

Okay, off to get ready for my own band's show tonight at DC 9.

Oh, and one unrelated final note: Maybe it was the onion-tangle for dinner, but I had amazingly odd and vivid dreams last night. Talking white squirrels, wandering the home of Tom Baker's Dr. Who (who had motion activated showers everywhere), gay weddings with guests dressed as mermaids and oysters, and lots of nudity. Strange...
