6/27/2005 - Nervous?
Well, just two more days till the band hits the stage for the first time. I'm busy working up some magnetic business cards to hand out, polishing my playing on a few songs, and planning the logistic of what we need to haul over to the venue.
It dawned on me last week that although I've done music for years and years, I've never been the front man of any band. In fact, Wednesday night will mark the first time I've ever:
- Sang lead vocals in front of a crowd
- Played bass in front of a crowd
- Performed material that is largely mine (in terms of lyrics and melody).
So am I nervous? Hmm.. just a little. I've always been good in front of crowds (and often find them easier to deal with that individuals), so that's a plus; but this is the first time out so some rough spots and awkwardness are to be expected. Still, I can't get too worried about it, because I've always felt that anything can go wrong during a show as long as you're a real person about it. Hell, Letterman used to live by this rule. No matter how bad his jokes bombed or how poorly an interview would go, Dave would just act like he was performing in your living room and had just knocked over a beer -- no big deal, shoot a joke about it and move on.
So what do you think on the business cards? Austere professional, or movie-poster fun? Which would you want on your refrigerator? Send me a response before they go to the printer at noon today.
