6/9/2005 - The Fantastic Futuro House
The Futuro house was one of the coolest "homes of the future" and one that actually saw production. Designed by Matti Suuronen, this fiberglass wonder was made for a brief period in the early 70s till the spike in oil prices (and hence plastic prices) killed the company. There are still a number of Futuros around the world and it'd be a dream to own and restore on. Till then, I'll just have to settle for sketching it.
The Futuro House
Interesting Futuro Aspects:
- Only about 100 were ever made, but the molds still exist
- It was a constructed of a fiberglass and polyurethane foam shell
- 8 meters in diameter
- 4 meters in height
- A mere 2500kg in weight
- 25 square meters of floor space
- 140 meters of cubic capacity
- Extremely efficient to heat

The book "Futuro: Tomorrow's House from Yesterday" has a wealth of information and even a DVD with film clips of the home. A great book which can be ordered here.
