5/10/2005 - Sonogram Bombs

My brother and his wife dropped the sonogram bomb last night. A small, grainy, black and white image that heralds the expansion of the Fitzgerald family come next November. I'm not sure how I feel about this. Certainly not indifferent, just... very balanced. It's almost as if all the positives and negatives of my brother having a child are in such perfectly equlibrium that the net emotional effect is zero. That sounds a little harsh, but it isn't meant to be.

I know I read a little hesitancy on my mother's face. I think she had really planned on retiring soon and enjoying some freedom. A grandchild will definitely incur upon that.

Oddly, this is the second "baby bomb" Will and I have received in the last two days. On Sunday we invited a neighbor who's wife was out of town over for an impromptu cookout. He told us that they'd just conceived and were expecting in October. I saw the same look came across his face that I read on my mother last evening -- an tentative smile that speaks equally of concern and happiness.

It's a big step.
