3/18/2005 - Listening to Music
It's a truism that most people rarely listen to music. Oh, they hear it, dance to it, work out to it, and drive to it, but few ever listen, focusing solely on it to the exclusion of all else. Music is a "passive" activity for most people -- a soundtrack for whatever else is going in in their live at the moment. You just don't hear many of many people taking an evening to sit and listen to an album or two.
Case in point, last night I was sitting on the couch listening to the stereo via airport extreme when Will came in and sat beside me. Our conversation went something like this:
WILL: "So what's up?"
ME: "I'm listening to music"
WILL: "Can't you listen to music and talk to me at the same time?"
ME: "No... then I'd be listening to you while music was playing. It's not the same thing."
Needless to say it went downhill from there...
Speaking of listening to music -- has anyone else noticed that these three current hit songs all start with just about the exact same intro?
- Slow Hands - by Interpol
- Somebody Told Me - by The Killers
- Take Me Out - by Franz Ferdinand
They were accidentally lined up in my iPod playlist and I thought the thing was skipping. Hmm, I guess this discovery simplifies the formula for writing a successful emo song...
