1/14/2005 - Breadth of the Beard
The beard has officially reached redneck/trucker length. It'll probably never make it to mountain man size, and certainly never cross over to the wizened elder look; but it just might make it to "college-aged-granola-cruncher" stature before I give it the whack.
It's odd how fuzz on the face feels, all wiry and warm, and even odder is its place in our society. The natural state of males is to have facial hair, yet in our culture most men take a sharp knife to their face every day to remove it. Is this done for cleanliness or in an attempt to appear more androgynous and pre-pubescent? If I had to guess, I'd say most men don't even consider the reasons. They simply ride the tide of fashion that's held sway in Western culture since the Roman empire.
Yes, shaving is the norm, and I suppose Desmond Morris must feel vindicated.
