11/9/2004 - Don't Just Whine About It
A lot of complaining and not many pledges of action -- that's what I keep seeing on people's blogs. It's an easy trap to fall into (I have), but remember: bitching on your blog won't change a damn thing -- actions will. And so, here is my commitment to doing something more than just griping about the religious right. Until George Bush is out of office I pledge to:
- Donate $50-$100 a month to organizations that support my views. I think I'll start with the ACLU this month and maybe the Cato Institute the next.
- Write one letter a month to a newspaper, politician, or organization voicing my concerns and opinions.
- Participate in all upcoming elections - even the small ones.
- Spend a little time researching how to successfully oppose the religious right and what makes them tick. I don't have time to become a full-fledged activist, but I'll help where I can.
- Be more aware of the organizations I deal with and their political affiliations. Should I really donate my old clothes to an anti-gay group like the Salvation Army? Probably not.
Well there's my list and let me tell you: I'm damn good at sticking to lists. So, what are you gonna to do?
