3/25/2004 - Under God Under Scrutiny

This week the US Supreme Court heard arguments on whether or not the phrase "under God" should be allowed in the pledge of allegiance. Questions of this nature always seem strange to me because their answers seems so self-evident. Of course the government sponsored pledge shouldn't contain a religious affirmation. How would the religious advocates of said inclusion feel if it were "In one nation, with no gods"? (Not a prayer mind you, just an acknowledgment of our nations historical trend toward ever-increasing secularism). They'd be angry, and with darn good reason.

Why must this nation be filled with an unfortunate brand of christians who eagerly to do unto others as they would never have done unto themselves?
