9/18/2003 - Web Emergencies and the Hurricane
Everyone is bracing for hurricane Isabel to hit the area. The Metro is closing early and the government and schools are shutting down for the day. I can't imagine its going to be all that bad, but we've got our emergency box all set just in case. Speaking of emergencies, let me take a moment to rant about "Web Emergencies"...

Let me be perfectly clear: In my mind the word Emergency implies an Indiana Jones moment. An imminent and serious threat to a person or important object that demands immediate and forceful action. So when a client approaches me in a fluster claiming that there is an emergency with their Web site it always take a strong dose of willpower not strangle them in the spot.
What in the hell could POSSIBLE constitute an emergency on a Web site?? How could ANYTHING I post really be all that important? Is a nude picture of their mother appearing on the home page? Is their list of clients' credit card numbers dancing across the screen? Are terrorist message secretly encoded within the site? WHAT THE HELL IS THE GOD DAMN EMERGENCY!!!
Truth to be told, I don't have this problem with most of the clients I work for these days. And its a good thing, It keeps the blood pressure down...
