6/21/2003 - Dem Naked Cavemen
I got a surprising number of responses about the Walking With Cavemen post the other day. For the record, let me state that I wasn't watching the show to see some skin. I can find plenty of that elsewhere.
Its just that this whole game of "hide the privates" is a huge distraction. Instead of just showing it and being done with it, they turn it into a peek-a-boo challenge that actually draws attention to the nudity. It reminds me of the skit at the end of the first Austin Powers movie where the actors are prancing around the hotel room naked while an absurd number of coincidental obstructions maintain their modesty:
"Milk my dear?"
"Why yes, thank you Austin!"
"Oh, behave..."
Society really has to get over this whole nudity taboo. Its just so damn silly.
I had just put the final touches on the above post when I came across this article which discusses Ang Lee's decision to keep the pants on the Hulk in the new movie. Apparently the notion of pants that could stretch to accommodate a 15-foot monster bothered Ang so he tried shooting a naked Hulk version. In the end he concluded it too distracting to constantly be hiding the behemoth's crotch and just capitulated to the trousers. Sounds like some great footage for the "Extras" on the DVD release...
