5/21/2003 - So Long Mr. Pointy
And so it ends: the very last episode of Buffy. Is sad to lament to the passing of a TV show? I guess one is supposed to be above such things (I read books I tell you!), but in this case I'll fess up. I watched the last episode and it was darn good! Not great. Not "Final episode of M.A.S.H." quality, but solid and satisfying. For the last 7 years I've watched that show and only missed 4 of the 144 episodes. It became my Tuesday night staple and I must say I really, really enjoyed it. I remember hearing about it when it first came out and thinking "My god that sounds idiotic", but somehow I actually watched it one night and was forever hooked. I'll miss it.
Buffy was really part of the larger superhero trend in the media. A trend enable by slick CGI effects and Hollywood's realization that you can have superpowers without sacrificing serious dramatic tones. Hell, its been a truth known since the poems of ancient Greece and now that the entertainment industry is onboard its being seen everywhere: Smallville, X-Men, Spiderman, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and, of course, The Matrix (which was excellent despite a prissy dissin' by Bob Mondello).
As a guy who's been a fan of superheros since he was 5, I couldn't be happier.
A few Buffy favorites:
- Character: Kendra the vampire slayer
- Villain: Drucilla or the Mayor
- Fight: With Glory at the end of season 5
- Romance: Faith and Xander "I can't believe I just had sex!"
- Tragedy: Joyce's death
- Comedic Relief: Andrew
- Episode: I wouldn't even know where to begin...
