On such a day, what words can be written that are not already being chattered across the Web a thousand times over? Staring at the screen and rifling thru my thoughts, I find it hard to imagine I have anything novel to interject. But still, it would seem remiss to say nothing, so here it is.

I feel the expected revulsion at the media's self-serving hype, and recall the visceral memories of a year ago, but seated more deeply is a sense of dread. A nagging worry that our country is inherently ill-suited to prevent this sort of thing from happening again.

We've never been the most proactive nation when if comes to foreign threats. Something about our isolationist leanings and general taste for democratic conflict resolution has too often prevented us from getting involved when we should have. How many times have we entered the fray too late, or with too little force, or left before the task was properly finished? It seems to be a pattern.

A year later the public appears to still have the stomach for tough military and foreign policy solutions, but will it last?. Somehow I don't think so, and that really scares me. Because, somewhere in the world, a group of very intelligent and very determined people might well be piecing together an atomic weapon, and planing for its delivery to our shores...

"What is the doom of man?"
"That he forgets..."
