5/24/2002 - Does Whatever A Spider Can

I wrote originally this last week, but with everything going on it got a little delayed...

Spiderman Swinging thru the air

I finally got to see Spiderman this weekend with Mike and Chad (er, Billy). It was quite a good flick and Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker was downright adorable. Its rare that I use that adjective to describe a guy, but in this case it really fits. Its wasn't Maguire himself that was so attractive, but the whole "mild mannered geek boy who doesn't realize how hot he is" thing that really worked for him in this film. I wish I'd met more guys like that back in high school...

Amorous concerns aside, the film was genuinely well executed. True the computer animation was not 100% realistic, and the plot was constrained by the standard super hero movie formula, but the end product was just a blast to see. Be sure to watch for Stan Lee being killed by the Green Goblin in the balcony fight scene.

In the year of my birth, there came another Spiderman in animated form. The Spiderman TV Show. I remember watching it when I was a child, but can't recall if it was really any good. It sure seemed good to me at that age. What does remain clear in my mind was that great theme song. A perfect one-minute encapsulation of classic A A B A song structure. Great stuff.

Behold the Spiderman song! (feel free to sing along)

Spiderman, Spiderman,
Does whatever a spider can
Spins a web, any size,
Catches thieves just like flies
Look Out! Here comes the Spiderman.

Is he strong? Listen bud,
He's got radioactive blood.
Can he swing from a thread
Take a look overhead
Hey, there There goes the Spiderman.

In the chill of night
At the scene of a crime
Like a streak of light
He arrives just in time.

Spiderman, Spiderman
Friendly neighborhood Spiderman
Wealth and fame, He's ingnored
Action is his reward.

To him, life is a great big bang up
Whenever there's a hang up
You'll find the Spider man.

One final thing. As a kid, Spiderman was always my favorite hero and my mom was pretty proficient at the ole Halloween costume, so...

A very young Fitz dressed as spiderman
Who's that SpiderChild?
