Count Doo-coot?
4/8/2002

I said DOOKU! DOO-KU!!
I was skeptical when I first read that Christopher Lee was 80 years old. I was certian it had to be a misprint. I mean the guy's old, but not THAT old!
But sure enough, Mr. Lee, the consummate master villain, was born way back in 1922. That's an incredible haul anyway you look at it, and to still be getting such choice roles is an strong testament to his enduring talent and popularity (unless you've been under a rock you have to know that Lee played Saruman in Lord of the Rings last year and will be starring as Count Dooku in the Attack of the Clones next month).
Its a truism that villains age far better than their do-gooder counterparts. Heros are usually expected to be young, beautiful, and laced with a degree of innocence. And while a villain can posses all of these traits, they are also free to abandon them. To wither, decay. To grow old and ugly and only seem more the menace.
Yes, for a lengthy career in the entertainment industry, it certainly pays to embrace the dark side.
I suppose I'd better start my life of infamy now, if I hope to have similar presence (and skill with a light saber) 46 years hence.
