12/6/2001 - And A Segway We Go
Early December and the temperature is in the low 70s? This is my kind of Holiday season! If only I had a scooter like this one to go zipping about outside.
Monday the mysterious " Ginger " was revealed to be gyroscopically stabilized scooter that would make any geek proud to own. Including myself. If you go to CNN you can catch videos of the gadget in action. Its amazingly nimble. Will Americans adopt it en mass? I have my doubts:
- $3000 is way too expensive.
- Competing with the automobile in the States is usually suicide.
- It offers no protection against bad weather .
- You can't carry too much on it.
Despite all this I'm hopeful for the device. It has a fantastic "gee whiz" appeal and could not have been given a better marketing launch. Its an elegant, innovative creation that reminds me in some ways of the original Macintosh computer . And just like that early computer I'm sure ginger will find a niche of loyal users who could care less what the general public thinks.
Yes I want one.
