1/12/2001 - Taylor Burke Dies
Patrick's dad died yesterday . He called to tell me around noon. He was shook up and I held the phone trying to think of something to say. What can one say? I never know in these situations...
Taylor Burke senior was quite a character. The owner of Burke & Herbert Bank , he was know for his playboy lifestyle, humorous eccentricities, and fiscal shrewdness. Greatly respected, and I imagine half of Alexandria will turn out for his funeral. I'll always remember him testifying before congress with his parrot sitting on his shoulder, and tearing about the city in his exotic sports cars. He lived life in a big and jovial way, yet at his core, was an extremely conservative and practical man. I believe it was these contrasts that gave his personality such depth.
I wouldn't say the Patrick and his dad were particularly close per se , but his father was a source of great admiration and respect. A strong guiding force for Patrick and a powerful anchor for the whole Burke family. No, Taylor Burke won't be easily replaced.
So I wish you the best my friend. That seems terribly so inadequate, but its all I have to offer. I know you'll carry on just fine. Its been your nature.
