2000 Year End Summary
1/1/2001
A brand new millennium, Time to back up the hard drive, snicker at overly optimistic futurists, and toss about all the things that have happened. So what can be said of 2000?
A step into mundania. Neckties, 9 to 5, brown bag lunches. Meeting and time sheets. A year cropped of its lows and highs. No deep brooding depressions, but also, no intoxicating highs. A very stable and productive year. In a word: dull.
There were times when I was very contented with it, and others when I was downright disgusted. I enjoyed the routine, but longed for more bohemian days. Is a life closer to the edge really that much better? Hard to say. I think its easy to believe so because the stories are always so much better, but is the quality of life really preferable?
For myself I feel the need to take a big step back. I miss being single and cruising thru the bars. I miss the feeling of being out of sync with the 9-5 world. I even miss being in debt. It all lended a taste of freedom and spice to my life that I sorely miss.
So what's the plan? Well as much as I miss being single I think I'll hold on to Wilbur here. I've kinda gotten accustom to him being around. And I don't think I'll plunge myself back into debt (but its damn tempting). Instead I've negotiated with my job to go part time, let me do most of my work at home, and to give me a big raise in the process (yes, its good to be a spoiled tech worker). This will allow me to work on my music, dump the commute, and reclaim large parts of my life. Things just keep getting better.
